The regional center, Termez, is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia—its history stretches back more than 2,500 years. Termez was a major hub on the Silk Road and a meeting point of diverse cultures, including Buddhist, Zoroastrian, Greek, and Islamic traditions. Today, the city is famous for its archaeological treasures such as Fayaztepa, Kampirtepa, and Karatepa, where ancient Buddhist temples, stupas, and statues reveal the deep historical layers of the region.

Surxondaryo is also celebrated for its dramatic landscapes. The majestic Hisar Mountains rise along the region’s eastern border, offering breathtaking views, hiking routes, and wildlife habitats—including rare species found nowhere else in Uzbekistan. The warm subtropical climate allows the region to grow fruits and vegetables—especially citrus fruits, pomegranates, melons, and grapes—making Surxondaryo one of the country’s agricultural powerhouses.

Life in Surxondaryo is deeply connected to tradition. The region is home to vibrant folk culture with unique dances, music, clothing, and craftsmanship. One of the most famous cultural symbols is the Surkhon horse and Buzkashi, a traditional equestrian sport that reflects the strength and spirit of the local people. Traditional villages preserve customs that have been passed down through generations, creating an atmosphere of authenticity and warmth.

In recent decades, the region has been rapidly developing while preserving its historical identity. Modern infrastructure, improved transport, new tourist routes, and archaeological research are attracting visitors from around the world. Surxondaryo remains a rare combination of ancient heritage, stunning nature, and living tradition—a region where the past and present come together in a vivid and unforgettable way.
