History
Own currency was introduced in Kyrgyzstan in a difficult time for the Republic: lack of consistency in monetary policy between the CIS countries, the forced use of a common monetary unit — the ruble. The government of Kyrgyzstan, seeing the hopelessness of the ruble, conducts a monetary reform in 1993, which resulted in may 10 introduced the national currency of Kyrgyzstan-som (translated from the Turkic — "ruble").
The exchange of roubles for catfishes was conducted at a ratio of 200:1. The first series of banknotes were issued in denominations of 1, 5, 20 catfish and 1, 10, 50 tyiyns. Banknotes of 50, 100, 200 som appeared a year later, and after the third issue 500 and 1000 som were introduced into circulation. On the obverse of all banknotes portrayed portraits of famous personalities-poets, actors, musicians, and on the reverse adorned the monuments of culture and landscapes of Kyrgyzstan. Pink and blue colors prevailed in the design of banknotes.
In 2009, there was a banknote of 5 000 som, which was depicted actor Suymenkul Chokmorov.
The first coins of 10 and 50 tyiyns, and 1, 3, 5 kgs minted by the Kazakhstan mint and came into circulation in 2008

Banknotes
Banknotes I and II series are not used now, also withdrawn from circulation 1, 5 and 10 som III series issue. The updated banknotes are dated 2009 and 2010.
