Uzbekistan and Malaysia strengthen partnership in pilgrimage tourism

A briefing was held in Kuala Lumpur, bringing together representatives of tourism associations, airlines, relevant organizations, as well as tour companies and mass media, to discuss the development and promotion of the “Umrah Plus” program.

During the briefing, detailed information was presented on the ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan’s tourism sector, as well as on measures aimed at increasing the flow of pilgrims from Malaysia and Indonesia. Special attention was given to the conditions created for pilgrims and the incentives provided for tour operators working in this segment.

As part of the event, participants were introduced to Uzbekistan’s rich historical and cultural heritage, including Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara—cities that played a significant role in the development of Islamic civilization. Particular interest was drawn to modern tourism facilities and complexes designed to ensure comfortable services for pilgrims and international visitors, notably the Center of Islamic Civilization and the expanded Imam al-Bukhari complex, established on the initiative of the country’s leadership.

A key outcome of the briefing was the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the tourism associations of Uzbekistan and Malaysia under the “Umrah Plus” program. The document provides for the implementation of joint practical projects, the exchange of experience in the field of pilgrimage tourism and the development of sustainable partnerships.

The event was held in line with the implementation of Resolution No. 6 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated January 9, 2026, “On Additional Measures Aimed at Implementing the “Umrah Plus” Pilgrimage Tourism Program.”
